I also considered saying it like the lads on top gear would say 'jag' but SHANNY, SHANNY and the jets has been stuck in my head for a while now.
Need to know more about how the Pentax metering system accounts for the massive spotlight cannon now sitting on the roof of the camera. Often it's way too powerful to produce a nicely lit/balanced image.
Also the K-S1 had a red gps satellite looking symbol up on its rear screen. No idea what that was. The SHANNY (iPhone auto corrects that to all caps?) menu and interface and physical lock switches etc are all pretty solid and reassuring. Well for someone like me who doesn't really know what he's pressing it all seemed fairly logically set out...
My K10D plays really nicely with my Siggy flash but the K-5II not so much.
Invariably I go full manual. Not something to be afraid of. At the end of the day using P-TTL is tantamount to putting your camera in Green Mode. It'll usually get a picture but not be what you had in mind.
I feel like that quote from the Force Awakens, the "these are your first steps" line, with regards to using flash.
So I've got the Shanny, hooked it up, it's all starting to come together, but each new bit of learning raises more questions...
Don't quite know how the Pentax P-TTL bit determines what strength the flash needs to be at. That bit is a bit of a mystery, as any metering process is I guess. The camera doesn't actually know the vision you're trying to achieve and all.
We're off camping again soon, and thought I'd try for one of those rear curtain flash photos with the kids on their scooters. Slapped the Shanny on and had a play. If I set it to manual and rear curtain mode, then it works as expected. If it's left in P-TTL mode, then it fires at the start and at the end. Assume it's a pre metering flash, but expect it will form part of the final image, which in rear curtain mode I wouldn't want.
Next question is, do the flash mode settings on the camera body do anything when a flash is mounted on top? Reason I ask is there are modes on the flash for most of what the body settings do, so which one rules?
What's with labelling power as 1/some value? % not good enough or you? Looks like 1/1 is full power and anything less down to 1/128 is less power? There's also option on other menus for adjustment from -3EV up to +3EV, which looks to do the same thing. Is this an industry standard or a Shanny thing?
The instructions with the Shanny are pretty good, I'm impressed. Good English and supporting diagrams/layout etc. That's cool.
There's zoom option, which is cool in that it reads the lens details from the Pentax. What does that actually do? -As I'm guessing the flash unit/side curtains aren't moving backwards and forwards based on this value.
Got the remote/slave mode working. That's pretty cool as it doesn't have to be total line of sight, assuming the popup flash can bounce around the room a bit. Looks pretty cool. Instantly limited to the 1/180 shutter speed cap though, so no HSS mode via the inbuilt flash.
On the whole, definitely a real unit. Am happy with that. Feels solid so would be happy to recommend, based on my limited experience of this whole entire field...
